Letter to the Editor : 1918 Kasson Public School

Letter to the Editor

Citizens of Kasson and Surrounding Areas,
The Historic 1918 Kasson Pubic School is calling out to you. It has served Kasson for over 90 years and it will continue to serve for an equal number of years and more providing space, shelter and functionality. That obvious and visible role is in partnership with its representation of the history and social fabric of Kasson, Dodge County and the School District. That is true regardless of where you were born or where you went to school- This historic landmark belongs to you regardless of your origin in the same manner that Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA belongs to you. It deserves no less of your attention and advocacy.

The school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 6, 2007. During the Minnesota Historical Society Review Board Meeting on October 16, 2007 board member and historian Dave Ebnet commented:

"Local history is as important as national history due to the fact that it occurs where people are living and spending their day-to-day lives so it is very important to recognize it."

Respectively Yours,
Kenton Spading

  1. Funny that Mr. Spading is so passionate about the old school yet hasn't lived in the community for years.

  2. Thank you to all who have worked to preserve and find a viable modern role for this historic piece of architecture.

The old school means a lot to me personally. I can say with certainty that I wouldn't exist if not for the Kasson Public School. My parents were teachers there (my mom taught second grade, my dad taught high school). Now that they're gone, it gives me comfort to see the place where they first met and fell in love. :)

    Sincerely,
    Lynne (Bartz) Beireis

  3. I think it's interesting how some people would prefer to keep a building that's full of asbestos and mold just because they went there as kids, rather than tear it down and use the space for something that today's kids can use, like a library or a park.

  4. Comparing the old school to Independence Hall is a bit of a stretch, Mr. Spading. And, Mrs. Beireis, how can driving by a boarded up old building give you comfort? Here's an idea, let's use that land for something productive and useful and maybe use some of the bricks or the front doors or something in a new building that will serve the community for another 100 years.

  5. Better yet. Get the city of Kasson out of the development business and our taxes will go down
